Segregation of waste at source is dropping your waste into the right bin/receptacle in your premises – whether at home or office or a public place. There are three waste streams that the law mandates you keep your waste segregated in, they are: wet, dry (recyclable & non-recyclable), and rejects. Waste segregation at source is the foundation of a responsible and sustainable waste management system for communities. When waste is mixed it essentially becomes unfit for recycling or any other further processing because of the contamination and the majority of the waste will go to landfills which is an environmental disaster. Waste segregation at source enables it to be collected separately and processed for maximum material recovery and minimizing what goes to the landfill.
A simple rule of thumb that one can use is that wet waste is organic and biodegradable. The
most
common source of wet waste is the kitchen - fruit and vegetable peels, cooked food, spoilt
food,
meat product wastes etc. Maintain a separate bin for wet waste and do not use any
plastic
liner
for this bin. You can use newspaper or any other biodegradable paper to wrap your
wet
waste bin.
Dry waste is a general term for a variety of materials - paper, plastic (including
non-recyclable Multi Layered Plastic (MLP) like Kurkere/Lays packaging), glass, aluminium;
cardboard, metal, dry coconut shells (not tender coconuts). Dry waste should at all
times be
kept away and separately from wet waste. Plastic wares, milk packets and other
items
that once
contained food should be rinsed, cleaned and dried before putting in the bag.
Reject waste includes domestic hazardous waste like diapers/sanitary napkins, used
bandages/needles etc. and inerts like ceramic, toenails, hair etc. Reject waste cannot be
processed or recycled and must be handled with caution. The only way to dispose of reject
waste
is to scientifically landfill it or incinerate the combustibles like diaper/sanitary/bandage
waste to get rid of the pathogens. Always wrap your diaper/sanitary waste in a newspaper so
that
the waste sorters don’t come in contact with potentially harmful blood/fluids/faeces and
pack
the rejects in a bag.
eWaste (electronic and electrical waste) should be kept separately especially
bulbs/tubelights
and batteries as they contain harmful materials like lead, mercury etc. They should be given
to
an authorized dismantler/recycler for proper processing.
Garden waste like leaves, twigs and branches if in very small quantity can be mixed with
wet,
else it should be kept separately. Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris waste should
also be
stored and handled separately.
Remember it is better to practice segregation imperfectly than not to practice it at
all.

Landfilling should be seen as a final processing solution only if there is no other option available for a particular waste stream. Landfilling generates methane a greenhouse gas 22 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in contributing to global warming and climate change. If proper segregation is not followed items like tube lights and bulbs can end up in the landfill these tube lights and bulbs contain harmful chemicals that seep into the water table when landfilled. Landfilling also strains virgin natural resources especially when recyclable items such as plastic are landfilled. Because of the anaerobic (lack of oxygen) conditions that constant piling up of waste leads to, the levels of methane go up as well as increases the time for degradation adversely impact the environment.
Hasiru Dala Innovations is a for-benefit, not-for-loss social enterprise and is registered as a private limited company with its corporate office located in Bangalore.
Our services are primarily designed for bulk waste generators. A bulk waste generator is a residential complex with more than 50 households or a non-residential organization that generates more than 10 kg of waste a day.
This service is for eco-friendly hosts who would like their events to be as green as possible and minimize waste generated and what goes to the landfill. We consult with the host, the decorator and caterer to ensure minimization of waste generation and assure that the waste that is generated is responsibly handled.
We are mandated by the BBMP to only serve bulk waste generators and are not authorized to offer our services to non-bulk waste generators i.e. those that do not generate more than 10kgs of waste a day.
Our services are primarily designed for bulk waste generators. A bulk waste generator is a residential complex with more than 50 households or a non-residential organization that generates more than 10 kg of waste a day.
We offer ad-hoc pick up of e-waste provided that there is a sizeable quantity (upwards of 40 kg). To schedule an E-waste pickup please call 9742112362. For our regular clients, it is part of our TWM service.
Our empanelment by the BBMP is limited to picking up municipal solid wastes which includes wet waste, dry waste, reject waste, eWaste and garden waste. We are not authorized to pick up hazardous waste like medical/hospital waste, hazardous post-production industrial chemical waste etc.
We offer buyback for dry waste provided that the waste is well segregated, clean and is of high-value – like PET bottles, carton boxes etc. If it is ensured that all dry waste is given to us without leakage through housekeeping or security, we will favourably consider a buy-back arrangement.
Our composting services are vendor agnostic and is tailor made for each client site. We take into consideration the amount of waste generated, space available and budgetary constraints before providing the client with a custom composting solution. We procure the hardware (machine, digester etc.), install it and train your people in the composting process. For those who would like to outsource the whole process, we provide composting services through our trained personnel.
We provide all required regulatory certificates of compliance to our clients including proof of authorized destinations of the different streams of waste.
