In 2013, when we pioneered Circular Events or Event Waste Management service in India, we were innovating an avenue for supplemental income for waste pickers. Today Event Waste Management has become an exciting movement with a fantastic community of zero-waste practitioners. From new startups venturing into the space, to influencers talking about how-tos of Circular Events, to different types of events embracing the concept, we are proud to say that we innovated a go-to market within the waste management industry.
Waste pickers love working at events because of the supplemental income, flexibility of timings, and getting to go to occassions and meet people that they otherwise would not. Creating a Circular Event, where nothing goes to a landfill, inevitably needs a workforce with certain skills. So here’s what we’ve been up to, perhaps our another first in the event waste management space!
1. Our zonal coordinators go to the wastepicker communities, assemble the waste pickers and let them know of the opportunity to offer services in events and what’s in it for them.
2. As we meet new people, willing to take up jobs for housekeeping and waste management, we organise training to upskill them. We train about the context of each type of event from a concert to a marathon to a wedding or a corporate conference. We impart skills that they can use not only in events, but further in other types of seasonal or permanent employment that they may secure.
3. We assure higher than market daily wages, and timely payments, with allocated responsibilities within an event and specified reporting and signing off timings. We offer them the opportunity to step up to be a professional service provider.
4. At the end of the day, we have built a workforce, large and skilled, equipped to handle events with more than 850,000 people in attendance.
